Traditional restoration of a historic Newton home.
This historic home was built in 1883, designed by prominent Boston-based architects Peabody and Stearns, and had been only minimally modified over the intervening decades.
The homeowners loved the Victorian character and details of the home and were committed to maintaining these, but they also desperately needed a kitchen that could fit their modern lifestyle. Our commitment to preservation and sustainability, and our experience updating older homes without compromising their character made us the perfect fit for the job.

Historic Victorian: Old Meets New
Byggmeister's Solution
Measures taken to maintain traditional aspects of the home included restoring the original wood flooring; installing inset door cabinetry glazed with restoration glass; and reproducing the original head-height tile wainscoting. We designed the cabinetry to be consistent in quality and appearance with the original kitchen cabinetry, while also providing the functionality of a contemporary kitchen. Traditional cabinet panels camouflaged professional appliances suitable for entertaining as well as pantry pullouts for easily-accessible storage. We also complemented the traditional aesthetic with contemporary flare by installing stone and stainless steel countertops.
The end result is a kitchen that meets the needs of this family on a daily basis, can easily handle large-scale entertaining, and fits comfortably into the long, distinguished history of the home. Together with our client we breathed new life into a beautiful old home, honoring its past by adapting it to meet the needs of the present and the future.
